Georg Kucinski is a Polish Jew whose family fled the pogroms in the east to Germany. When war breaks out, he attempts to sign up with his brother, Johann. But for medical reasons, his brother is disqualified from military service. Now, after training, he finds himself at the front. Surrounded by friends in arms, he's thrown into the melee. As his unit, the 6th Bavarian Reserve Regiment, fights over the town of Wytschaete, he'll face the reality of war and the price it asks of man.
